about

The title of this song deserves a little bit of explanation.

I wrote it during the COVID lockdown and I had an awful lot of time on my hands. Consequently, I spent even more time reading than I usually do. Around November or December of 2020, I was reading a historical novel that was set in ancient Rome. I started to get accustomed to the way dates were expressed using the Roman (Julian) calendar.

The first month of the Julian year, Januarius, was named for Janus, the dual-faced God of Beginnings. Janus could look forward into the new year at the same time that he looked back at the old.

Thanks to Shakespeare's play about Julius Ceasar we’ve all heard of The Ides of March , but it turns out that every month had an Ides which simply indicates the middle of the month. What I learned from my reading was that the first day of each month also had a name. It was known as the Kalendas. This is where our word "calendar" comes from.

The first couple of tracks for this song were recorded on January 1st 2021. Since it's an instrumental, there are no lyrics to help come up with a title. For lack of any better reason than to make people ask questions, I named the song Kalendas Januarius.
